Many people prefer solid wood when customizing a wardrobe due to its natural beauty and durability. However, because it's made of wood, it's highly susceptible to pests, especially if not properly maintained. After rainy seasons, mold and insects can easily develop, so it's essential to take preventive measures if you've purchased a solid wood wardrobe.
Painting for Protection
To protect the wooden cabinet from pests, you can apply coatings like raw tung oil, shellac, or varnish to undamaged areas. This creates a barrier that prevents mites and cockroaches from reaching the wood. Be sure to paint all surfaces, including the inside and back, evenly for maximum effectiveness.
Liquid Spraying for Infestations
If the wood has already been damaged by insects, you can mix dichlorvos with water in a 1:5 ratio and spray it onto the affected areas using a sprayer. Repeat this process 3–5 times, and after 8 hours, the aphids should be eliminated. Once done, rinse the cabinet with water and let it dry completely before proceeding.
Cleaning and Treatment
On sunny days, place the infested wooden cabinets in direct sunlight. Use a brush or cotton yarn to apply diesel to the surface. Let it dry for a couple of hours, then reapply and expose it to the sun again. Finally, wash the cabinet with washing powder, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely.
Termite Control
If you notice long worms inside the wood, it's likely a termite problem. Modern termite control methods are quite effective—some treatments work like a virus, infecting and killing termites throughout the structure. It's important to act quickly to prevent further damage.
Additional Care Tips
Avoid placing solid wood furniture in direct sunlight, as it can cause fading or peeling over time. Keep it away from air conditioners and heaters. Adding a few potted plants or a fish tank in an air-conditioned room can help maintain humidity and reduce moisture absorption. Always use soft padding on the furniture’s feet and avoid dragging or slamming it when moving. If there are scratches, have them professionally repaired. Wipe the furniture with clean, soft cloths to avoid leaving water marks or scratches.
Solid wood wardrobes are more expensive than other types of wardrobes and require careful handling during storage and maintenance. Whether it's painting, spraying, cleaning, or termite control, proper care is essential to ensure the wardrobe remains in excellent condition for years to come.
