Introduction to Morning Glory Cultivation Techniques:
Morning glories thrive in well-drained soil and require full sunlight and good air circulation. During the growing season, water the plants when the top layer of the potting mix begins to dry out. Apply liquid fertilizer every two weeks, but avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can lead to overly lush foliage at the expense of flowers. It’s important to provide support structures for potted morning glories, such as trellises or stakes, to help them climb properly.
Morning glories are excellent for vertical gardening on fences or walls, and they also do well in containers and garden terraces. Start planting in early April using a standard potting mix combined with coarse sand. Use pots with an inner diameter of about 13 cm, and plant 4 to 5 seeds per pot. Since their seed coats are thick and germination is slow, you can make a small cut near the top of the seed to speed up the process. After sowing, keep the temperature around 25°C, and germination should occur within about 7 days. Once the seedlings have developed two cotyledons and are strong enough, transplant them into individual pots. When moving the plants, trim the main root by about 1 cm to encourage better root development. Plant them in larger pots (second container), one per pot. For field transplantation, handle the seedlings carefully—never touch the main root. The smaller the seedling, the earlier it should be transplanted, and the larger the soil ball, the better for root establishment.
When the seedlings have 6 to 7 true leaves, remove the entire scion and replace the pot with a larger one (24 cm in diameter). Prepare the potting mix with added fertilizer, and include 50 grams of hoof meal as a base fertilizer. Water thoroughly after planting. Place a 1-meter-long bamboo pole in the center of the pot. Then, use a 3-meter-long wire, wrap it around the bamboo pole starting from the bottom, and spiral it upward to form a tower-like structure. Secure the top end of the wire to the top of the pole. Morning glories grow in a left-handed spiral, so ensure the wire spirals to the left to match their natural climbing direction. When the main vine reaches the top, pinch off the tip to encourage branching. When side vines grow to 6 to 7 leaves, prune the tips to promote more flowering and continuous blooming throughout the season.
