China's manganese ore imports rose by 42% in May

In the context of an anticipated rise in the operational rate of ferroalloy plants during the wet season, which begins in May, Chinese manganese ore traders have ramped up their imports. This strategic move is driven by the expectation of higher demand for manganese in the coming months. According to China's customs data, the country imported 147,826 tons of manganese ore in May, marking a 41.7% increase compared to the previous month and a year-on-year growth of 31.2%. The surge in imports has started to impact market prices, with manganese ore prices showing a downward trend. One of the key factors contributing to this decline is the increased supply from South Africa, where production has risen significantly. However, demand from manganese alloy plants has not kept pace, leading to a surplus that puts pressure on prices. In fact, the FOB price for 38% manganese ore in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, fell to $3.96 per ton last week, a decrease of 7 cents. Similarly, the CIF offer for 44% manganese ore at Tianjin Port, China, dropped to $5.59 per ton, down 3 cents from the previous week. In May alone, China imported 471,594 tons of manganese ore from South Africa—an impressive 72.4% rise from the previous month and a 69.5% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, imports from Australia reached 485,416 tons, reflecting a 41.1% monthly increase and a 39.2% annual growth. As a result, Australia became the largest source of manganese ore imports for China in May. This trend highlights the dynamic nature of the global manganese market and underscores how supply and demand fluctuations can quickly influence pricing and trade flows. With the wet season approaching and industrial activity expected to pick up, further changes in import volumes and pricing are likely in the near future.
