In the world of jade, terms like "positive color" and "color cast" are commonly used to classify the various hues found in jade stones. Among these, green and red are considered the most desirable and are referred to as "positive colors." High-value and gem-quality jade is expected to display a vibrant, pure, bright, and evenly distributed color—often described as "concentrated, positive, yang, and uniform."
There are six types of green that are classified as "positive green" in the jade industry:
1. **Brilliant Green**: A deep, rich green without any yellow undertones, often called "emperor green" or "high green." This color is highly prized for its regal and noble appearance.
2. **Apple Green**: Slightly yellowish when viewed closely, but not visibly so with the naked eye. It exudes energy and vitality.
3. **Sapling Green**: Contains a small amount of yellow, resembling the fresh green of young spring shoots. It gives off a sense of freshness and vigor.
4. **Emerald Green**: A dark, bright green with a slight yellowish tinge, offering a pleasing and elegant visual appeal.
5. **Pretty Green**: A medium-depth green that conveys elegance and beauty.
6. **Huangyang Green**: A lighter green with a subtle yellow tone, giving a relaxed and refined impression.
In addition to green, there are three types of red that are considered "positive red":
1. **Bright Red**: A vivid red with a hint of yellow, symbolizing wealth, celebration, and joy.
2. **Orange-Red**: A mix of red and yellow, representing happiness, harvest, and prosperity.
3. **Beeswax Red**: A combination of red, yellow, and white, evoking a sense of elegance, calmness, and comfort.
Beyond green and red, all other colors such as gray-blue, yellow, white, and black are considered "color casts." These include shades like blue-green, gray-green, melon green, dark red, brown red, and more. These colors are generally less valuable in the market. Additionally, purple was traditionally regarded as a color cast. However, over the past two decades, the value of purple jade—especially varieties like "spring" (dragon and violet)—has risen significantly, now ranking second only to green in popularity and desirability.
