Main Material
The primary material for the original wooden door is eucalyptus, which is known for its excellent quality and affordability. While the coffin industry offers various types with differing origins, impacting their prices, beech furniture is often regarded as mid-to-high-end. Eucalyptus itself strikes a balance between cost and durability, making it a popular choice.
Wood Identification
Raw wood doors are crafted from carefully selected natural wood. A key characteristic is that all parts of the door leaf are made from the same tree species, ensuring consistency throughout. These doors do not involve filling. Unfortunately, due to the lack of regulation in the wooden door market, unethical merchants sometimes pass off solid wood composite doors as raw wood doors to boost profits.
First, examine the material. Tap the door lightly; if it produces a mellow, textured sound, it’s likely real wood. Common woods used include Sapele, rosewood, ebony, teak, cherry, walnut, maple, eucalyptus, ash, hemlock, spruce, southwestern birch, pine, and others. Sapele, ebony, rosewood, teak, cherry, and walnut are typically imported varieties.
Second, observe the texture. Since raw wood doors are made from natural timber, they retain the inherent texture and natural imperfections of the wood, which cannot be avoided. In contrast, other wooden doors may use cheaper wood for internal filling (such as plywood) while being externally veneered with more attractive wood.
Third, assess the weight. A simple way to gauge the value of a wooden door is by its weight and stability. Heavier doors tend to be of higher quality and less prone to warping over time.
Fourth, consider the moisture content and storage period of the wood. Southern climates with high humidity require wood to have a dry-wet ratio of 8-12 degrees, which is considered standard. Properly dried wood should be stored naturally for 20 days to a month before use.
Fifth, evaluate the carving detail. Superior carving techniques provide an artistic experience. Hand-carved designs are particularly impressive, offering a strong three-dimensional effect and lifelike details. This craftsmanship reflects the essence of the door.
Sixth, inspect the cross-section at the top and bottom of the door. For raw wood or solid wood doors, the difference is apparent. A raw wood door will show a single log section without splitting marks, whereas a solid wood door often reveals glued planks at the base. If the door appears seamless and integrated, it’s likely a solid wood composite door.
