Main Material
The primary material used in the original wooden door is eucalyptus, which is known for its excellent quality and multiple advantages. The price is also quite reasonable. However, it's important to note that coffins come in various types and origins, so their prices differ. Beech furniture, for instance, is often considered mid-to-high-end.
Wood Identification
Raw wood doors are crafted from carefully selected natural wood. One key feature is that the components of the door leaf are made from the same tree species, ensuring uniformity both inside and out, without any filling. Unfortunately, due to the lack of proper regulation in the wooden door industry, some unethical merchants pass off solid wood composite doors as raw wooden doors to boost profits.
First, examine the material. You can tap on it to listen to the sound—it should have a mellow and textured tone. Common woods used in wooden doors include Sapele, rosewood, ebony, teak, cherry, walnut, maple, eucalyptus, ash, hemlock, spruce, southwestern birch, pine, and others. Among these, Sapele, ebony, rosewood, teak, cherry, and walnut are imported woods.
Second, look at the texture. Since raw wood doors are made from natural wood, they naturally possess the unique texture and inherent imperfections of the wood, which cannot be avoided. Other wooden doors might use any type of wood for internal filling—such as wood-based panels—and then decorate the exterior with more attractive wood veneers.
Third, assess the weight. The easiest way to gauge the quality of a wooden door is by its weight and stability. Heavier wooden doors tend to be of higher quality and less prone to deformation over time.
Fourth, consider the dryness and storage period of the wood. In the humid southern climate, the ideal dryness level for wood ranges between 8-12 degrees. To reach this standard, the wood must be stored in a natural environment for around 20 days to a month before it’s ready for use.
Fifth, evaluate the carving process. High-quality carving techniques offer an artistic experience. Hand-carved designs are particularly impressive, with strong three-dimensional effects, vivid details, and lifelike representations—the hallmark of a great door.
Sixth, inspect the cross-section of the top and bottom sections of the door. You can differentiate between a raw wood door or a solid wood door by observing the bottom section. A raw wood door will display a single log section, seamless and without splitting marks, whereas a solid wood door typically shows glued sections of planks. If the bottom section isn't visible and the entire door appears integrated, it’s likely a solid wood composite door.
