Cotton aphids, commonly known as greasy insects or oil and sweat pests, are a serious threat to cotton crops. These small, soft-bodied insects feed on the sap of cotton plants, primarily clustering on the underside of leaves and tender shoots. As they feed, they damage plant cells, leading to curled leaves, stunted growth, and the secretion of honeydew. This sticky residue promotes the growth of sooty mold, which interferes with photosynthesis and further weakens the plant. Timely application of **insecticides** is essential to prevent severe infestations.
The life cycle of cotton aphids is rapid, with multiple generations occurring throughout the growing season. In China, the main infestation periods occur from mid-May to mid-June during the seedling stage, and from mid-July to mid-August during the boll-forming stage. With up to 10–20 generations per year, their population can grow quickly if not controlled. In recent years, cotton aphids have become one of the most significant pests in major cotton-producing regions, causing substantial yield losses.
For effective management, it's important to monitor the population and apply control measures when thresholds are reached. During the seedling stage, the control threshold is set at 5–10% of true leaves showing curling before rolling, 100–300 aphids per plant, and 20–30% leaf curling for 4–8-leaf plants. When the population reaches 2,000–4,000 aphids per plant, intervention is necessary. For the boll-forming stage, the threshold is 20–30% of curled leaves, 10,000 aphids per 100 plants, and more than 3% of oil spots on middle leaves.
Chemical control methods include the use of insecticides such as Xi'an Dingsheng’s Red Scorpion 30% Acetamiprid, which should be diluted at 8,000–10,000 times for foliar spray or 2,000–3,000 times for drenching. If resistance is high, mixing Red Scorpion at 10,000 times with Bright Sword 20% WDG (1,000–1,500 times) can improve effectiveness. These treatments not only target aphids but also help control other pests like mites and bollworms. For best results, it is recommended to combine these sprays with Xi’an Ruite’s multi-foliar fertilizer, which supports healthy plant growth and enhances both quality and yield.
