PART 1: Living Room Feng Shui

In China, due to cultural and geographical differences between the north and south, the size of living rooms varies significantly. Whether it’s a small living room or a spacious one, it serves as both a welcoming area for guests and the central hub for daily activities. In home layouts, the living room is a focal point, reflecting the homeowner's cultural values and character. The saying "a grand room should be large but not overly cluttered with decor" highlights its importance. Given the vastness of the living room and its connection to other functional spaces, it contains numerous pieces of furniture, making its impact on the overall energy flow of the house significant. Whether it's about enhancing aesthetics or warding off negative influences, the living room holds immense significance, and its decoration demands careful consideration to foster a sense of comfort, harmony, and prosperity.

The primary factors influencing the living room layout include location, shape, lighting, ceiling design, flooring, furnishings, and entry points. These elements should be designed in a cohesive manner to create a harmonious relationship between family members and their surroundings. The internal and external arrangement of the living room is crucial.

An ideal living room should have a square or rectangular shape. Some homes, however, may feature narrow, elongated living rooms (where the length is more than twice the width), L-shaped, or irregularly shaped ones. These configurations are less desirable because they lack dignity and balance, which are essential for positive energy. A narrow and long room can lead to feelings of being scattered and lacking vitality, while an L-shaped design may feel cramped and difficult to organize. Irregular shapes often create discomfort and make it hard to feel serene in such environments.

Second, the Location

The living room should ideally be placed near the entrance of the house. Traditional Chinese architecture followed the principle of “front-back symmetry,” placing the living room close to the door to absorb beneficial energy directly from the entrance and establish a strong energy field. Many modern homes still follow the concept of having an open entrance leading straight into the living room, which is undoubtedly a wise design choice. Some Hong Kong and Taiwanese scholars argue that the living room should be positioned at the "center of the house," or what they call the "imperial pole." This view is somewhat extreme. While the living room is vital, there is no need to place it exactly at the center of the house, even if it creates symmetry. In traditional homes, the living room wasn’t centrally located but instead was situated along the front half of the central axis. In terms of placement, the most important principle is to locate the living room towards the front of the house.
