"First Financial Daily" learned from Baosteel Group yesterday that the list of the top 20 global steel companies in 2010 was recently released, and China's steel companies accounted for 9 seats in the top 20. In addition to ArcelorMittal is still the world's largest steel company, China's Hebei Iron and Steel (3.91, -0.09, -2.25%) Group and Baosteel Group ranked second and third, the world's top ten steel companies in China The steel company has six seats.

However, despite the huge production alone, China’s steel concentration is still low due to the lack of progress in China’s mergers and acquisitions in the steel industry last year.

According to the reporter, last year, global crude steel output reached 1.414 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 15%, a record high. Most of the world's major steel mills have double-digit growth in capacity utilization, but production has not yet recovered to the level before the global financial crisis. China's crude steel output in 2010 was 626.7 million tons, up 9.3% year-on-year, accounting for 44.3% of global production. Due to the low base in 2009, the growth rate in the United States and the European Union is relatively high, while the growth rate in Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States is relatively low.

Among them, Germany's ThyssenKrupp's crude steel output increased the most, up nearly 52%, ranking from 23rd last year to 19th this year; US steel company's growth rate was 46%, from last year's 16th place jumped to 13th place; Japan's Nippon Steel, JFE Company and Nucor Company of the United States increased their crude steel output by more than 30%.

Although the increase in crude steel output of Chinese steel companies is not as high as that of European and American steel mills, due to the large base, there are still six companies that have entered the top ten global steel production. In addition to Hebei Iron and Steel Group and Baosteel Group, Anben Iron and Steel Group, Wuhan Iron and Steel Group, Shagang Group and Shougang Group ranked fourth, fifth, ninth and tenth; South Korea's largest steel mill Posco, Japan's largest The steel mills Nippon Steel and Japan JFE are ranked sixth, seventh and eighth. In the top ten steel production in 2009, there were only five steel mills from China.

It is worth noting that, similar to 2009, Hebei Steel surpassed Baosteel and has already ranked the top spot in global steel production. After completing the merger and integration of several major steel mills in Hebei Province, Tangshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., last year, Hebei Iron and Steel added more than a dozen private steel enterprises in Hebei Province, and steel output jumped to 60 million tons.

However, due to the difficulty of uniting the local government's interest structure and strength, in addition to Hebei Iron and Steel, other domestic steel giants have made little progress in mergers and acquisitions last year. At present, the crude steel output of the 10 largest steel groups in China accounts for less than 50% of the total crude steel in the country. This is far from the goal of the top five steel companies in the domestic iron and steel industry adjustment and revitalization plan to account for more than 45% of the national production capacity.

In contrast, Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steel company, has a market share of one-third in the Japanese domestic market, although individual steel production ranks only seventh in the global production list. During the Spring Festival this year, Nippon Steel also announced jointly with Japan’s third-ranked steel company Sumitomo Metal Industries that the two companies intend to merge and calculate the crude steel output. The combined entity will occupy half of the Japanese steel market and is expected to Became the No. 1 in Japan and the second largest steel company in the world.
