In the production of mahogany furniture, the "round and round" technique refers to the way the legs are shaped. When viewed from the side, the rounded legs are covered by the curved outer contour of the piece, including the edges and leg coverings. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that some parts use a single material to create multiple mixed surfaces, visually enhancing the thickness and sophistication of the design. This method also allows for intricate circular patterns, adding a decorative touch that makes the furniture stand out.
First, the structure of the round package is carefully crafted. Not all components are rounded—some parts like the sides and legs are made from square materials to create a mixed surface. The inner parts that aren't visible remain square, while only a small section of the leg and frame is rounded to form a seamless connection, making the scorpion (a traditional Chinese term for a decorative element) fit perfectly.
Second, the "round and round" structure is highly detailed. The outer skin of the scorpion is cut at a 45-degree angle, intersecting with adjacent lattice corners. The skin is then wrapped around the leg, creating a unique angle on the scorpion’s corner. Some designs feature longer or shorter ends, and the edges of each part are angled and cut precisely. The top of the leg doesn’t always need to pass through the mortise on the side, allowing for more flexibility in the construction.
