Jiangsu Shagang Group Co., Ltd. has recently been honored with the title of "National Metallurgical Clean Production Environmentally Friendly Enterprise" by the China Iron and Steel Industry Association. This recognition highlights a major milestone in Shagang’s efforts to promote energy conservation, reduce emissions, and advance its low-carbon development strategy.
Despite operating in an era of shrinking profit margins, Shagang has remained committed to increasing environmental protection investments. The company has focused on desulfurization of sintering flue gas and has significantly boosted its spending on energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies, air pollution control, and waste recycling. For instance, it has invested 150 million yuan to build two sintering flue gas desulfurization systems using high-efficiency rotary spray technology. This has led to an annual reduction of over 8,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions. Currently, Shagang's sulfur dioxide emissions per ton of steel have dropped to just 1 kilogram, far below the industry standard of 1.8 kilograms.
To date, Shagang has invested over 5 billion yuan into energy-saving and emission-reduction projects, including the development of new technologies like "electric furnace hot-packing hot metal energy saving" and "one-step iron-making and steelmaking." Over 150 energy-saving and emission-reducing technologies, such as large-scale blast furnace dehumidification and energy-saving upgrades, have helped save 300,000 tons of standard coal annually.
In addition, the company has spent tens of millions on projects like the renovation of the 5800m³ blast furnace ore dust removal system and the sinter plant car receiving tank dust removal, reducing annual dust emissions by 260 tons. An investment of 100 million yuan was made to construct a new slag processing line capable of handling 750,000 tons of slag per year, minimizing unorganized dust emissions. In sewage treatment, the second phase of the 40,000-ton wastewater reuse project is underway, which will increase water reuse rates and cut chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 180 tons annually.
Shagang has transformed its steel production process from a linear model of “resources-products-waste†to a circular economy of “resources-products-renewable resources.†As both a steel manufacturer and a clean energy converter, the company has pioneered new models for implementing cleaner production, deep resource utilization, and circular economy development.
By integrating energy efficiency, environmental protection, clean production, and circular and low-carbon economies, Shagang has implemented 49 major clean production projects. Following the 3R principles of circular economy—reduce, reuse, recycle—the company promotes energy-saving and resource utilization at different levels: small cycles within departments, medium cycles between plants, and large cycles between the enterprise and society. Through initiatives like gas recovery, steam reuse, slag utilization, coke by-product recovery, and industrial water reuse, along with pollution control projects, Shagang has achieved both economic and environmental benefits.
Currently, over 96% of Shagang’s resources are recycled and deeply utilized. The low-carbon economy contributes about 20% of the company’s total benefits. The company has built numerous waste utilization lines, including a steel slag brick production line and four slag micro-powder lines with an annual capacity of over 3.6 million tons. These efforts not only solve industrial particulate pollution but also generate hundreds of millions in circular economy revenue annually. They also help reduce flue gas desulfurization costs and cut industrial dust emissions, supporting Jinfeng Town in Zhangjiagang City in becoming a "National Health Town."
Shagang has established a professional heating company that uses recycled steam as its core resource. With a 15-kilometer steam pipeline network, more than 20 enterprises, including hotels and bathhouses, now share steam resources. In 2012, the company supplied over 200,000 tons of steam, delivering significant social and environmental benefits.
As part of its ongoing efforts, Shagang is accelerating the implementation of its "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" energy-saving strategy. The goal is to achieve a total energy consumption of 578 kg of standard coal per ton of steel by 2015, a comparable energy consumption of 520 kg of standard coal per ton, and 3.5 cubic meters of new water per ton. The water reuse rate is expected to reach 98%, with clean production reaching the top level. These targets place Shagang among the industry leaders in energy conservation and emission reduction, driving the company toward its mission of becoming a truly environmentally friendly enterprise.
