Heliatek Organic Solar Cell Efficiency Up to 12%

Heliatek, the global leader in organic thin-film solar technology, recently announced that its organic solar cell efficiency has reached a new high in the world, reaching 12%, thus breaking the 10.7% record established by the company 9 months ago. The new efficiency has been certified by a professional testing agency.

The new record-keeping battery is a standard 1.1cm2 size and contains two patented absorbers that convert light from different wavelengths into electricity. Through the combination of two kinds of absorbers, absorption of photons can be enhanced with a higher photovoltage and energy can be better utilized. Due to the unique performance and low radiation of organic photovoltaics at high temperatures, the efficiency of 12% can be comparable to that of conventional crystalline silicon modules and thin film photovoltaics with 14-15% efficiency. The test results confirm that the efficiency of organic photovoltaics surpasses the average in low light and high temperatures compared to traditional solar technologies.

The results show that Heliatek's development strategy focuses on the vacuum deposition of oligomeric absorbers instead of printed polymers. The former has been successfully used in OLED-displays for the past 10 years. Vacuum deposition allows the deposition of an ultrathin homogenous layer, the thinnest being only 5 nm thick. With an ultra-thin layer deposition process that can be easily grasped, a certain number of layers can be laminated together to produce a laminated battery with extremely broad spectrum absorption capability, and even a three-junction solar cell.

This new record of organic solar efficiency is the result of the joint development of the research team of Heliatek with the universities of Dresden, Germany and Ulm, Germany. The research and development program has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the European Union, the German Research Consortium and other departments and agencies. . Based on this result, Heliatek plans to increase conversion efficiency to 15% by 2015.

The company's organic solar cell technology based on small molecules (oligomers) is currently in the process of commercial production conversion. The first production line was completed in the spring of 2012, and it mainly produces solar thin films, and it is also a partner for building materials, automotive and other industries. For them to use the semi-finished product as a production component to extend the functionality of their own products. It is expected that products incorporating Heliatek's organic solar film will enter the market by the end of 2013. The company plans to continue investing and build a larger production line to achieve mass production in order to significantly reduce production costs.
