Argonne National Laboratory launches more energy-saving and environmentally friendly engine



The dynamics of engine spark ignition are complex, and scientists usually need months to accurately simulate. Now, scientists at the Argonne National Laboratory of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) are using a new software model to study this dynamics more quickly, integrating this new model into a computational fluid dynamics software package used in industry Highly complex processes in internal combustion engines. Automotive engineers hope to seek engines that can significantly improve fuel economy and meet future emission standards by predicting and controlling the cyclic changes within the engine. The new model will greatly reduce the calculation time required for advanced engine simulation, and the simulation calculation time for hundreds of consecutive engine cycles can be shortened from 2-3 months to 10 days.
The new model aroused the interest of a company focused on computational fluid dynamics (Convergent Science), and the two parties will cooperate to integrate it into the company's flagship software product, CONVERGE. The project lasted two years and was funded by the US Department of Energy's Small Business Preferential Program. The plan aims to overcome the key technical challenges facing the US Department of Energy National Laboratory and US small businesses. The project software integration test was successfully completed in June last year. This collaboration has led to a unique capability development that has the potential to greatly benefit engine OEMs by significantly speeding up the turnaround time of engine design.
The project also produced two publications on the subject co-authored by researchers from both parties, reflecting the high-quality interaction between partners. This is a successful example of technology transfer and cooperation between national laboratories and industrial companies. Argonne National Laboratories has been looking for this partnership.
