Niobium-iron-silicon alloys have been widely recognized as a practical room temperature magnetic refrigeration material, but it usually takes at least one week of annealing to form its main phase, and it is extremely difficult to synthesize single-phase components at low silicon content. Recently, the Laboratory of Rare Earth Magnetic Functional Materials of the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, accurately locates a range of non-stoichiometric components with rare earth tellurium through phase diagrams, and finds that it takes only a few hours for such components to be rapidly processed. The main phase of silicon-iron-silicon is formed, and the lower silicon content of the main phase makes the magnetocaloric performance improved, which will help shorten the preparation cycle of high-performance magnetocaloric materials. In addition, the researchers used a diffusion couple method to systematically study the phase formation mechanism, phase morphology, and phase relationship of this rare earth-rich alloy, and discovered that a binary La5Si3 transition phase makes the main phase grow into a lamellar structure. The diffusion distance decreases, and annealing time decreases.
The research results were published in the journal Acta Materialia (vol.118, p. 44-53, 2016). The study was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's key projects and projects and the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Resources Commission.
