Chinese scientists suggest that carbon dioxide can be stored in the deep sea for a long time

Chinese scientists have found that burying carbon dioxide in deep-sea sediments is expected to achieve safe and permanent storage. According to the research published in the American Journal of Scientific Progress on the 4th, the facilities required for deep-sea storage of carbon dioxide are similar to the semi-submersible offshore platforms used for flammable ice mining. The injection of carbon dioxide is conducive to flammable ice mining, and both can be conducted simultaneously.

The geological storage of carbon dioxide is one of the important means to reduce the content of greenhouse gases. Conventional site selection includes deep saline layers, abandoned oil and gas fields, deep coal seams, etc. However, carbon dioxide may float up in the formation and there is a risk of leakage.

Zhang Dongxiao, the corresponding author of the paper and dean of the School of Engineering at Peking University, told Xinhua that the deep-sea storage makes full use of the high-pressure and low-temperature conditions of deep-sea sediments. Under such conditions, high-density liquid carbon dioxide will cause negative buoyancy, and carbon dioxide will react with water to form carbon dioxide hydrate. Two factors can prevent carbon dioxide from floating in the formation.

Teng Yihua, the first author of the paper and a PhD student at Peking University of Technology, said that compared with previous studies, this study considered the effects of dissolved components and hydrate formation in the stratum, and promoted the deep-sea geological storage of carbon dioxide from a simple conceptual model to accuracy Physical process simulation. The research results are expected to make deep-sea geological carbon storage a viable alternative to terrestrial carbon storage.
