AlcanRhenalu, a Canadian aluminum company, developed an advanced AL-Cu-Li alloy designed to offer exceptional fracture toughness, making it ideal for manufacturing thin and lightweight plates. This innovative material was patented in the United States under patent number US7744704B2. The alloy composition includes 2.7-3.4% copper (Cu), 0.8-1.4% lithium (Li), 0.1-0.8% silver (Ag), and 0.2-0.6% magnesium (Mg). It also contains at least one of the following elements: 0.05-1.3% zirconium (Zr), 0.05-0.8% manganese (Mn), 0.05-0.3% chromium (Cr), 0.05-0.3% scandium (Sc), 0.05-0.5% hafnium (Hf), or 0.05-0.15% titanium (Ti), with the remainder being aluminum and trace impurities. To ensure optimal performance, the sum of copper and lithium must satisfy the condition: (Cu + 5/3Li) < 5.2.
The production process begins with homogenizing and annealing the ingot at temperatures ranging from 490°C to 530°C for 5 to 60 hours. Afterward, the ingots are rolled into thin and intermediate plates with a final thickness between 0.8 mm and 12 mm. These plates undergo stretching of 1% to 5% to improve their mechanical properties. Finally, the material is aged at temperatures between 140°C and 170°C for 5 to 30 hours, ensuring the desired strength and durability. This alloy is particularly well-suited for aerospace and high-performance applications where weight reduction and structural integrity are critical.
