Made in China! New nano-reactor opens new path for lithium-sulfur battery design

Recently, a breakthrough research paper on lithium-sulfur batteries was published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.

The research team led by Professor Liu Jian and Professor Wu Zhongshuai of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences developed Fe1-xS modified mesoporous carbon spheres as nanoreactors for cathodes of lithium-sulfur batteries.

The nano-reactor has good polysulfide catalytic activity and cycle stability. It can provide a new solution for designing safe and high energy density lithium metal batteries.

It is understood that the theoretical energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries is 2600Wh kg-1, and the theoretical capacity is 1675mAh g-1. However, due to the slow conversion kinetics of sulfur during charging and discharging, the utilization rate of sulfur is low and the shuttle effect is serious. This will further reduce the capacity and stability of the lithium-sulfur battery.

Therefore, a properly designed electrocatalytic system can achieve stable and efficient catalytic conversion of polysulfides under high sulfur load, thereby obtaining higher cycle stability.

In this study, the researchers designed a mesoporous carbon nanoreactor decorated with highly dispersed Fe1-xS electrocatalyst nanoparticles (Fe1-xS-nc) and applied it to have high catalytic activity and high sulfur Loaded lithium-sulfur battery cathode.

The nano-reactor has a low mass density, high porosity and highly dispersed electrocatalyst, which significantly improves the adsorption and catalytic conversion capabilities of polysulfides.

The researchers found that at a current density of 0.5C, the initial value of Fe1-xS-NC after 200 cycles was 1070mAh g-1, and its capacity hardly decayed.

Professor Liu said: "The nanoreactor design strategy provides a new solution for manufacturing large-capacity, long-cycle rechargeable batteries."

He added: "This will open a way to design safer and high energy density lithium metal batteries."
